Maggie Frith is a passionate business owner, wife, and mother of three who also happens to be a Semi-Finalist from Season 4 of the Great Canadian Baking Show on CBC. After years of practicing law, Maggie left the legal profession behind to focus on her family and a dormant-too-long passion for baking.
Maggie created The Magpie Cakery to do two of her favourite things: gather people together and bake. There is nothing she loves more than being able to share her passion for baking…except maybe a muffin…but only really good muffin.
“Baking helped me feel alive and inspired as I recovered from “life after law”. It’s how I reconnected with family and friends, and it provided me with a unique way to help others celebrate special occasions. Now, I'm dedicated to inspiring others to find joy through the power of baking.”
With thousands of baking and decorating participants and countless 5-star reviews, Maggie’s dream is a reality at The Magpie Cakery!

Maggie’s Fave RECIPES
Win at home baking with Maggie’s go-to goodies.
Spring baking is definitely worth coming out of hibernation for! Try this Lemon Raspberry Bundt Cake (or as my kiddos love to call it, their fave “Butt-Cake”). With the fresh, vibrant flavours of lemon and raspberry, you’ll taste Spring in every bite!
This Gingerbread Cheesecake with Ginger-Whipped Cream is the perfect way to celebrate the holidays! Topped with super-cute gingerbread decorations, it also makes a festive centrepiece!
Savoury Roasted Pepper Buckwheat Crêpes, It’s Meatless Monday today, and every Monday around these parts!! And here’s a trusty, healthy, kid-friendly go-to for your meatless meal rotation…Buckwheat Crêpes with Balsamic-Roasted Peppers, and a Cashew-Roasted Red Pepper “Cream” sauce.
They are the perfect on-the-go snack, and can keep up to a month in the freezer (although they never last that long if my husband knows they’re there). They are jam-packed with protein, fibre and good-for-you fats (who doesn’t love those!?)
I love indulgent muffins…you know the ones – full of butter, refined sugar and enriched flour. They hold a spot near and dear to my heart, but I also love a healthy muffin. And I love a healthy muffin because I actually think they have the capacity to taste better than an indulgent muffin. Don’t believe me? I dare you to make these Banana-Blueberry Olive Oil Muffins…that’s a double-dog-dare, people.
These healthy muffins are called “Monday Muffins” around these parts. These parts have three sets of little ears running around, and the word “pumpkin” in connection with a “treat” would most certainly raise alarm bells and banish these tasty treats to the vegetable category.
Healthy and hearty, these Breakfast Cookies are gluten-free, vegan and naturally sweetened. As an added bonus, they come together in the time it takes to preheat your oven! These are sure to become a new family-favourite!
SUPER NUTTY MAPLE GRANOLA. This right here, people, is my life-force. My breakfast, lunch and/or snack all rolled up into one easy peasy recipe. It’s versatile – as in, eat it with seasonal fresh fruit, sprinkled on top of your favourite yogurt, mixed with your favourite kind of milk or straight from the palm of your hand (my personal go-to).
Oh, to be young and care-free again. But with age, comes wisdom, right? Well, maybe not always, but when it comes to soft and chewy cookies, we can make the wise call. That’s where these Soft and Chewy Date-filled Almond Butter Cookies come in.
Who doesn’t love the classic flavour combination of Peanut Butter and Jelly?? If you’re looking for a shout-out to your youth, with a more sophisticated and healthy twist, then look no further – I’ve got you covered with these PB & J Energy Balls.
Enter these healthy Puffed Quinoa Granola Bars. They are made with wholesome ingredients and are designed to keep the Small Humans in your life away from the cusp of “hangry”. You’re welcome:).
As a kid, I had a big, beautiful lilac tree outside my bedroom window. An awesome old house with no air conditioning meant a steady stream of lilac in the air…and while Lilac Season is fleeting, I’m trying to make the most of it with a scattering of little purple gems throughout the house and this simple Lilac Syrup.
These right here, friends, are the only Cinnamon Buns you will ever eat again. They are perfectly fluffy, gooey, cinnamon-y and oh, so delicious. I have made many cinnamon buns over the years – some have been good, some have even been close to great. But these are epic. And you need them in your life.
The “perfect” chocolate chip cookie is totally subjective. I get that. But, if you like your cookies to be chewy-in-the-centre, crisp-around-the-edges, with a caramel-nuttiness and a perfect balance of sweet and salty, then these cookies are for you!
English Muffin Loaf – all the crunchy crust, and nooks and crannies you need without the shaping and griddling fuss! Let’s get baking!!
S’mores Sandwich Cookies!! I really love the Summer. Hot, sticky days spent outdoors, capped off by a campfire and an ooey-gooey, roasty-toasty, chocolatey S’more. Ahhh, what’s not to love, really?
This is my favourite scone recipe because it can be easily adapted to create the BEST SCONE…for you and your taste buds!! When you build your own scone, you’re bound to be happy with the flavours!!
My favourite part of Winter is when it’s over. I wish I was kidding, but I’m not. Maybe not what you’d expect from a girl who grew up in Northern Ontario, Canada. The only thing I like about Winter is that it’s Citrus Season. Love me a lemon. Love me a Lemon Tart with Toasty Marshmallow Meringue even more…
Butter Tarts. The perfect treat – any time, anywhere. Ooey, gooey goodness wrapped in the perfect pastry. Indulgence never tasted better.
The sound of that crinkly wrapper sure does bring me right back to my teens and one of life’s greatest pleasures – eating treats with your pals. Who’s with me?? I’ve been trying to bring a little joy to my kids’ locked-down lives lately and these little puppies have done the trick. So, if you’re looking to add a new treat to the rotation, then look no further – I’ve got you covered!!
There’s something about lemon curd that gets me every time – tangy, perfectly sweet, creamy and buttery. It is the perfect accompaniment to scones, biscuits, quick breads, pound cakes, or a lonely spoon destined for your mouth. It can be used as a filling for pies, tarts and cakes. The possibilities are endless, really! So what are you waiting for? Let’s get our lemon curd on!!
If we can bake the Apple-Cardamom Frangipane Tart, you can to! Follow our step by step recipe to create this perfectly sweet, impressive but do-able tart.

"An educational escape"
We broke away from our usual monthly manager meeting and embarked on a fun-filled afternoon at The Magpie Cakery! From the first whisk to the final sprinkle, the studio was filled with excitement and laughter. This event at Magpie Cakery isn't just enjoyable; it's an educational escape from the office that we wholeheartedly recommend for your staff.
